Music Director: Concert Choir
Job Announcement: Director of Concert Choir
The Piedmont East Bay Children’s Choir seeks a Director for its Concert Choir, a 40-voice choir of children, approximately ages 10-13. Concert Choir rehearses on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 4-6pm in Piedmont. Position available beginning July 2009.
Background:
For over 25 years, the internationally-acclaimed Piedmont East Bay Children’s Choir has offered local children an outstanding program of choral training and performance. The Choir enrolls 320 children, ages 5-18, drawn from all over the East Bay. Our various choirs will present more than 50 concerts this year in local cities as well as more distant destinations, including tours to Orlando, Helsinki (Finland), Tallin (Estonia), and other locations in northern Europe.
The foundation of our program is an outstanding education in music and singing, but we also strive to offer lessons in creativity, expression, poise and engagement with many cultures, a character-building, transformative process we describe as “Growing With Music.”
Overview of position:
The Piedmont East Bay Children's Choir (PEBCC) consists of twelve levels of choirs in two divisions: the Training and Performing departments. The training department provides a thorough grounding in the basics of singing and music theory, helping students to build their skills at a steady pace while keeping the emphasis on “fun.”. After completing the various levels of training department programs, children progress to Performing Department groups, which represent the pinnacle of children’s choral training and performance.
The Concert Choir, the Performing Division’s entry-level group, is a chorus of girls and treble-voiced boys who have demonstrated proficiency in Performing Division auditions and are under the age of 16.
The Concert Choir Director is expected to oversee and direct all Concert Choir activities, beginning with a mandatory summer camp in August, continuing with twice weekly rehearsals throughout the school year, approximately ten to twelve performances per season at various events, and culminating in a domestic tour of 3-7 days in the spring or early summer.
The director is supported by an administrative staff but is expected to take a significant role in communications with families. The Director also provides written progress reports for each student at the conclusion of each semester.
PEBCC places emphasis on good vocal pedagogy, basic music theory and ear training.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Advanced degree in choral or vocal music, or equivalent education/experience
• Significant experience working with young singers
• Excellent verbal and written communications skills
Compensation:
$13,500-$15,500 per year, DOE
