Composer Mark Winges has collaborated with the Piedmont Choirs for many years. The Choirs have commissioned and performed a number of his pieces, and he is a frequent visitor to rehearsals and performances. At the turn of the century Piedmont Choirs joined Max-Reger Musikschule of Meiningen, Germany, to produce this unique Christmas recording. The village bells of Meiningen peal and young voices lift in familiar and traditional songs, in two languages, from two cultures. The message is clear: Music is a language of peace and friendship. Recorded in 1994, Piedmont Choirs' first CD features a variety of repertoire including three commissioned works: "A Piece for Magic Strings" by Mark Winges, "Three Russian Calendar Songs" by Arkadi Serper, and "Sing All Ye Joyful" by KirkeMechem. Additional repertoire includes settings of traditional folk melodies "This Old Man" and "Are You Sleeping, Brother John?", Irving Berlin's "Puttin' On the Ritz" and "Alexander's Ragtime Band", and renaissance part-songs by Josquin De Prez and Claudio Monteverdi. In the summer of 2003, Ensemble and Ancora made a concert tour to Italy and Slovenia. The choirs entered one of the world's most prestigious choral competitions in Gorizia Italy where they received a prize for the highest score among equal-voiced choirs.
