Day 2: First Full Day of Camp - Rehearsals, Theory, and Voice Lessons Oh My!
Our first full day of camp started off with pancakes, apple compote, and sausage for breakfast followed by a great warm-up led by Eric! Campers went to their theory classes with Tim and Eric, and then we came back together for our second rehearsal of the year. Rehearsal was followed by a tacos for lunch, which we ate while we talked and got to know each other more. There was a brief group meeting on the patio to make a plan for afternoon free time before the campers headed off to rest period.
For the first few days of camp, when everyone is still full of energy, rest period is no one's favorite activity, but the campers were quiet (for the most part) and enjoyed the break, during which they could nap, read, work on theory, and do other silent activities. In the afternoon, all campers had their first voice lessons with either Camp Director Alice or with Nik Nackley, a choir alum and now choir parent (his daughter will be at Camp Joyful Voices next week!) While not in their lessons, campers had free time during which some of them stayed around the cabin playing games, a few took hikes, and some of us headed to Turtle Pond for more kayaking, swimming, and friendship bracelet-making time.
At the end of free time, campers came back to their cabins to get ready for recital. Eric kicked off recital with a beautiful piano piece by Brahms (as well as a brief music history lesson). Two brave and talented campers, Gina and Iain, performed second and third. Gina sang a piece by Claude Debussy accompanied by Eric, and Iain sang and played "Fly Me to the Moon," always a crowd favorite. Our two voice teachers finished up recital, demonstrating beautiful vocal talent for our singers to aspire to and learn from.
After recital, our performers led the way to dinner, where we ate chicken, roasted veggies, rice and mushrooms, the usual salad bar, and of course plenty of options for vegetarians. There were delicious brownies for dessert before campers and Eric headed to their evening rehearsal. Tonight's evening activity was movie night! After a few technical difficulties with the projector, we played The Princess Bride on the old TV in the corner. Who knew DVD players still existed? Campers enjoyed popcorn, cookies, and lots of laughs before heading to bed for a well-deserved night's sleep so they can be refreshed and ready to go for tomorrow's adventures!
