DAY 9: Learning and Leading
This morning, the campers woke up to a foggy start in the morning. After getting ready for Holiday-Day and cleaning their cabins, they enjoyed a yummy pancake breakfast with fresh fruit, turkey sausages, and cereal.
Once the campers were done eating, everyone headed up to Maple for morning warm-ups with Alice. During warm-ups, everyone got to stretch their bodies through some sun salutations and then went through vocal muscle-specific stretches, finally getting to sing their first note of the day!
In musicianship today, Will’s class learned about the Circle of Fifths and quizzed themselves on key signatures.
After morning rehearsals, everyone was excited to make their own turkey sandwiches with chips and carrots. Cabin Salmon was especially excited to welcome Char back to the lunch table today and eager to talk about all of the new songs they’ve been learning.
With brief announcements from Camp Director Tate reminding us to wear sunscreen and stay hydrated, especially with the great weather today, the campers were overjoyed to learn that rest period would not be mandatory rest today. Everyone then got to sing Happy Birthday to Ensemble mentor Murielle, who turned 14 today! Happy Birthday!!
Cabins quickly got their photos taken for spirit day judging, bedecked in their holiday-themed outfits.
Today’s arts and crafts activity was making cool things out of modeling clay. Once it dries, a magnet will be attached and everyone will have their own customized magnet from choir camp! Eleanor made a clay version of Ramona, Lenna made a portrait of her mom, and Molly made a Moomin magnet! Most campers took advantage of the sunshine and spent the day at the lake swimming, diving off the floating dock, canoeing, kayaking, and pedal boating! Many ensemble members stayed behind, however, to have their section leader auditions with Eric.
After dinner — baked chicken enchiladas, rice, salad, and a rice krispie treat for dessert — campers returned to rehearsal. CC listened to Bach’s "Domine Deus” duet which they are singing. They also listened to the Finale from Tchaikovsky 4, which contains the song “Little Birch Tree,” which many of them are singing in voice class. While, Ensemble worked hard on the Ukrainian hymn to the light for the Cal Performances collaboration and also learned the choreography to "Why Should I Leave,” the 5th movement from the “Echoes of Eureka” opera.
For Camp Joyful Voices, they spent some of their rehearsal time working on their special craft to go with one of their songs they spent time rehearsing today! For their evening activity, they played choir bonding games like freeze dance, rock paper scissors battle, and more before getting to bed.
Tonight’s evening activity was leadership elections. We will learn of the results tomorrow. Talk to you tomorrow! (Photos are taking a while to sync tonight, most should be up by morning!)
