DAY 4: Beads, Paint, and Bonding Oh My!
Today was a wonderful day filled with friendship and bonding! Breakfast consisted of toasted bagels, oatmeal, cereal, and apples. During musicianship classes, Will’s class focused on compound meter rhythms in preparation for one of Ensemble’s Ukrainian Carols. Anna and Kailamae’s class practiced major and minor intervals and did a four-part la-scale. At lunch, Roya, Zuri, and Emi practiced their voice lesson songs and sounded incredible! Right before rest period, campers posed for spirit day which was Decades Day! Cabin Salmon won first place with their grecian wreaths and renaissance outfits. Cabin Trout did a 2020 theme and all wore masks and sweats.
At arts and crafts today (bead animals and jewelry making), many campers made presents for friends. Tallulah, Ava, and Hazel started their first friendship bracelets at arts and crafts! Shai made 3 bead frogs! Avi made a lizard, his favorite bead animal. Daria made cute friendship rings! Angie made arts and crafts lead Maddy a friendship bracelet, while Simone made a cute key chain for her friend. Tate taught Leila and Noemi how to make bead animals—they both made owl key chains. At the pond, Sophi and Ainsley learned how to dive off of the dock!
Camp Joyful voices had an awesome afternoon surprise—an activity aptly named “Paint the Counselor.” This is a long held camp tradition in which the CITs hide, and the campers search for them then cover them in paint! Everytime Hazel went to paint the counselors she exclaimed “Stamp!“ Another camper Adelaide, always asked if the CITs liked the paint color before adding to the canvases that were the CITs.
After dinner — teriyaki chicken, fried rice, and broccoli — Concert Choir started working on the Nutcracker. Ensemble continued working on one of the Ukrainian carols and sang it on both solfa and “fruits and vegetables” rhythms.
For tonight’s evening activity, CC and Ensemble did leadership training and bonding activities—in preparation for mentor/mentee assignments in a couple days. Camp Director Tate guided the campers in reflective discussion on what makes a good leader and mentor. Campers shared many insightful things and learned that some of the most important things in a mentor is to listen to mentees, be a safe person to talk to, take charge when needed, and help uplift their achievements, among many other things. Parents—great job raising these wonderful kids, we are so excited to watch them grow!
CC mentees played team games in complete silence, (ask your kids what “fedora order” means) which inspired them to communicate and collaborate without words! The sopranos won the “human knot” competition, but all singers still got an eraser animal prize :-) They ended the activity with a meditative moment—pass the squeeze which is a choir tradition. Ensemble rookies played a rousing game of “Fishbowl” — a game similar to charades, that also required communication with minimum words!
The CITs led tonight’s Camp Joyful Voices activity which was also bonding! They played “I love London” and “human knot.”
At lights out, Cabin Eagle had a special performance of an original song by Liv that she plans on singing at open mic night! All campers are snuggled up in bed, sweet dreams!!
