DAY 3: Serenade in the Sunshine
It was another chilly morning here at Walker Creek. But the kids were decked out in “Under the Sea” spirit costumes bright and early, unfazed by the morning fog. Campers delighted in a hot breakfast of sausage, egg & hash browns, plus the usual cereal. Then it was off to warmups, this time under the direction of Voice Teacher Alice. After gently stretching our bodies and voices, singers went to their musicianship classes. Leila and Mia worked on sight-reading rhythms in Tim’s musicianship class. Simone and her classmates sang minor scales in a 4-part round and “slayed it.”
Concert Choir started learning the 4-part section of In Anchor Bay - a fun challenge for many who have never sung in four parts before. Ensemble rehearsed Echoes of Eureka and a Japanese song. Both choirs are progessing quickly and locking into their sound.
The clouds gave way to welcome afternoon sun. Lunch was burrito bowls, complete with yummy churros for dessert.
After announcements by Director Tate, it was time to judge each cabin’s spirit day outfits. Shoutout to Hawk for their spongebob theme (see video) and to Ember from Eagle for her spot on “Little Mermaid.” Joyful Voices creatively used construction paper to add to their costumes. Ultimately, Trout won first place for their stellar costumes (see Una’s shipwrecked sailor being nibbled by a shark and Nora F.s Jellyfish!!) Simone and Yamuna can’t wait for tomorrow’s spirit day - they wont tell us what they have planned, but stay tuned.
Campers rested in their cabins after lunch, and were happy to open mail sent by family and friends. Many were surprised at how they immediately fell asleep once they finally stayed still - nap time is important at all ages!
Afternoon free time was a joy with the bright sun out for the first time. Many campers took a trip to Turtle Pond to enjoy the nice weather. Char, Nora F. and Kerala came back arm in arm, giggling about a new inside joke. Chloe and Audrey went out on a canoe together to explore the pond.
Many chilled out in the hammock, or read on the tarp. Julia, Daria and Leeza along with others played games of “werewolf” with Counselor Sofia. Daniel and Ainsley shared funny tour stories with Zofia, Ember and other Ensemble first years.
It was “Letters Home” day at Arts & Crafts - so expect some creative snail mail, parents! Eve, June, Molly, and Roya also collaborated to write a letter to Christine, our amazing CC Accompanist. Every day is also friendship bracelet and lanyard making day; as Adelaide, Maia, Emma and Shai from JV spent much of today doing just that. Zuri started her first friendship bracelet ever!
In line for recital, Eleanor and Ramona were having fun playing pretend, while Sara and Nora V. spotted some wild turkeys and deer also lining up for recital on the other side of the building. We had our very first camper perform at recital tonight! Lenna played a song for us on the piano. We were also serenaded by our three counselors-in-training; Mei, Scarlett and Mirella sang an ensemble favorite, “Encinctured with a twine of leaves.”
We had a yummy dinner of Hot Dogs, tater tots, and salad - followed by cookies for dessert and more rehearsal.
Tonight was “Cabin Bonding” so each cabin did something special. Georgia and Elodie bonded on a short hike with the rest of their cabin through “the enchanted forest,” led by Counselor Flo. Kerala, Sage, Audrey and Isabella named the goats on a visit to the Little Farm (Joeisha and Mary) and the whole cabin shared roses and thorns from their day. Camp Joyful Voices had a fashion show, complete with wacky costumes. The CC and Ensemble boys took an evening hike to the water tower. Cabin Otter played 2 truths and a lie to get to know one another better. Cabin Trout did choir themed charades, and Cabin Hawk told each other stories.
Campers are now all snuggled up in bed! Goodnight and see you tomorrow.
